Where we were
We started somewhere in Allentown New Jersey with plans of making it to Pennsylvania then Unionville we made it halfway and set up camp, it was later decided to just go back to the car. We were navigating using a map and also double checking the direction on our phones.
We had tents that were supposed to be good for -30 degree weather, sleeping bags, sleeping bag covers, none of which helped very much, I think it got to 20 degrees at night and I was shivering the entire time, thee most uncomfortable sleep of my life, because I was also wrapped in 5 layers of clothing.
We brought many snacks along the trail, a sandwich and also Mountain house camping food like Mac & cheese and eggs and bacon. We were able to boiling water using a burner and cooking kit. We had water bottles but also a water filter from sawyer that we used along the way.
We were able to start a small fire, it stayed on it’s on for a little while. We had hand warmers and toe warmers, I had all this extra stuff I didn’t need like body spray, lotion and deodorant haha I was so cold I didn’t even take off anything the whole time.
It was beautiful out there, I love being in nature. The downside for me was that it was freezing at night, I was so uncomfortable not only because I was on the ground and I was wrapped up in all of my clothing, a sleeping bag and cover with hand and toe warmers but on top of all this it was still freezing.
Also, my body is feeling every second of that 20 miles right now. Legs, thighs, butt, back, shoulders which means I had an excellent workout, which should be good for the next 3 days.
I’ve never hiked more than a day so this was new and I also never camped at all so doing it in the cold was not for me. Overall it was a great experience, I can now say I hiked 20 miles on the Appalachian Trail!
